Sarah, a speech-language pathologist, is passionate about providing access to communication across a user's life, especially in rural areas of Oregon, where she is based and access is limited.
Recently, Sarah met a middle aged woman, who has Cerebral Palsy. Throughout her life, she had not been able to find a reliable way to communicate. “The impact has been truly life changing, not just for her, but also for her caregiver. Witnessing her excitement as she was finally able to express her thoughts, feelings, and needs to everyone in the room was an unforgettable moment. Every individual, regardless of age or diagnosis, deserves a voice and the opportunity to connect with the world around them. Moments like these continue to inspire me to champion access to AAC and ensure that everyone has the chance to communicate.”
Down in Hawaii, Krystalyn grew her passion for AAC whilst working alongside another Solutions Consultant. After she saw the impact of the partnership between Solution Consultants and AAC users, she decided to dedicate her working life to it.
One of her most memorable experiences was helping a young student with cerebral palsy and cortical visual impairment, find an eye gaze solution that worked with his limited vision. Reflecting on the experience, she shared: “Watching him communicate and independently participate in activities and games with his school team for the first time was an emotional moment for everyone in the room. Helping someone find their voice for the first time is what makes supporting the AAC community so rewarding”.
In New York, Jackie’s passion for AAC began after seeing an eye gaze device demonstration while she was in graduate school. Since then, she has supported children with diverse communication needs, finding the greatest reward in helping them express their thoughts, feelings, and personalities.
One experience that stands out involved helping a student with a traumatic brain injury gain access to a specialty mount through insurance. By partnering with a Tobii Dynavox Funding Specialist, Jackie helped secure the right solution, reinforcing the importance of advocacy and collaboration in supporting communication.
