Beyond the device: Where do you go when you need AAC training?

Read about the wealth of free AAC knowledge you can find on the Learning Hub and get some tricks for customizing high-tech AAC

Speech-language pathologist completing AAC training through the Tobii Dynavox Learning Hub using on-demand courses and live workshops.

Let’s say a new TD Navio just arrived at your speech therapy clinic and you’re not sure what to do after you take it out of the box. What’s your next move?

When it comes to getting started with or getting the most out of AAC, the answer is the Learning Hub. It hosts a library of on-demand videos for setting up each of our products, as well as a calendar of live virtual trainings where you can take deep dives into AAC topics and bring your questions to our team.

Courses include “Making the Most of TD Snap” and “Create Activities with Boardmaker 7”, where you can learn how to create a language learning activity to use in your classroom or therapy setting right away. While on-demand courses fit into any schedule, live trainings give you an opportunity to interact with AAC experts face to face.

“I've always been afraid of diving into AAC. But this course has been very helpful and encouraging,” said one of our customers after taking our “Model Like You Mean It” course.

One of the most exciting things about our solutions is how easy they are to customize to different needs, communication styles, and personalities. That flexibility is ideal for speech therapists and special education teachers, who serve many unique children or teens. A lot of our sessions cover how to personalize our software for these age groups.

Gain some quick knowledge now with these three tricks for customizing TD Snap for kids.

How to tell jokes

TD Snap + Google Assistant Command

Let’s say you work with a child who likes making people laugh. To help her tell jokes, create a TD Snap button with the Action Send Google Assistant Command “tell me a joke.” It will generate a fresh joke each time she selects the button.

How to send text messages

IOS Shortcuts + Text

Most teenagers, including those with visual impairments who rely on symbol-based communication, want the freedom to send text messages to their friends. To enable this within TD Snap, you can create a Topics Page with conversation starters, like “What shows are you watching lately?” or “Got any good music recommendations?” Then, use the iOS Shortcuts action to program buttons with friends’ phone numbers. Teens can also create novel messages in the TD Snap Message Window, then navigate to the Topics page and select who they’d like to receive them.

How to do interest-based learning

Play YouTube Video action + create speaking button

Autistic kids often learn better when lessons center on their likes and interests. Playing clips of their favorite shows can help them connect with new vocabulary or phrases. To play a clip in TD Snap, use the Play YouTube Video action and create a button. Pair it with speaking buttons that contain related words or phrases. Play the clip and then model selecting the speaking buttons. See if your client will imitate you.
