Building Communication from the Start: AAC's Role in Early Intervention
Description Every child deserves access to communication from the very beginning. In this course, participants will explore the role of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in Early Intervention (EI) and examine the evidence supporting early AAC implementation. Through research, case examples, and practical demonstrations, learners will challenge common AAC myths, explore how AAC supports language development alongside speech, and identify practical strategies for embedding a total communication approach within everyday routines and goals. As part of our 5th annual Winter Conference,we are excited to feature this new session highlighting practical strategies like play-based intervention techniques, language facilitation strategies, and AAC resources that support communication growth across environments. Caroline Gaddy, MFA, MA, CCC-SLP is a Learning Consultant for Tobii Dynavox. In addition, she a speech-language pathologist, AAC specialist, disability advocate, and neurodiversity educator. Caroline worked for many years in school settings as a teacher and an SLP. She also worked in medical settings with adult and pediatric populations, and specialized in supporting communication access for people with multiple disabilities. Caroline is passionate about disability justice and inclusion, and firmly believes that communication is a fundamental human right.
